An Enhanced Street Sweeping Pilot Program: The Road to Heavy Metals TMDL Reduction Compliance

B22 Tuesday, August 20, 2:30 –3:00 p.m. / Grand Ballroom E

A pilot program sampled accumulated street dirt from 10 homogeneous land-use areas over a six-month period; samples were taken during three separate sweeping events, with one pre- and one post-sweeping sample collected per event. Results include average loading by curb length, average pickup by particle size group, and an estimate of both metals pickup and likely metals removal from stormwater. Controlled pickup testing quantified the effect of sweeper type, forward speed, and initial accumulation. These were used to enhance the existing sweeping program.
