Performance and Capacity of Compost Biofilters in Urban Runoff and Green Infrastructure Applications

G71 Thursday, August 22, 8:00 – 8:30 / Rooms 106-107

A study conducted at the USDA-ARS in Beltsville, MD, evaluated the use compost biofilters for stormwater treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the multiple-event removal efficiency and capacity of compost filter socks’ natural sorbents to remove soluble phosphorus, ammonium-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, E. coli, Enterococcus, and oil from urban runoff. This presentation reviews the study and where and how these sustainable biofilters can be used.
