The City of Myrtle Beach Downtown Corporations Efforts

P11 Tuesday, August 20, 8:00 – 8:30 / Rooms 202-204

Myrtle Beach is one of the largest tourist destinations in the US, but for several years the city has been plagued by bad publicity associated with high bacteria counts in the surf zone. Stormwater had been routed to the beach from the downtown area through a series of small outfall pipes. The city has been studying solutions to the problem; recommendations include replacing the outfall pipes with deepwater ocean outfalls and comprehensive revitalization of the downtown area. Work hinges on successful implementation of the ocean outfall master plan, because stormwater treatment upstream must be designed, permitted, and installed. This presentation looks at how the city is combining and funding the various projects.
