Challenges of Urban Metal Recycling Facilities and Stormwater Compliance

P81 Wednesday, August 22, 9:30 –10:00 a.m. / Rooms 202-204

As stormwater regulations have increased, Baker Iron and Metal, a scrap metal facility in business since 1921 and located in a highly urbanized area, has found innovative ways to address stormwater. The facility had concerns common to the industrial sector, such a stockpiles stored in the open and unpaved work yard areas, as well as old infrastructure, space constraints, and residential neighborhood restrictions. Baker installed various BMPs throughout the site to address problems such as sediment tracking into the public right of way, metal debris in the stormwater infrastructure, and dissolved metals and vehicle oils. The presentation covers assessment of the facility, structural and non-structural BMPs implemented, success or failure of the BMPs, and maintenance requirements.
